Confined space awareness May 14th 2026

Course Overview

Designed for firefighters, firefighter candidates, and fire prevention personnel, this State Fire Marshal–approved Confined Space Awareness course provides foundational knowledge required for safe operations around confined spaces. CAL FIRE recognizes this course for meeting awareness?level training requirements.

Participants will learn to identify both permit?required and non?permit?required confined spaces, understand the hazards associated with each, and recognize the regulatory and operational responsibilities of fire service personnel.

Course Content Includes:

  • Identification of confined spaces
  • Distinguishing permit?required vs. non?permit?required spaces
  • Common hazards and atmospheric risks
  • Target industries and typical confined?space environments
  • State regulations and compliance requirements
  • Communication protocols
  • Equipment considerations and limitations
  • Fire service roles in prevention, response, and support

Important Note

This course does not qualify participants to make permit?required entries. It is strictly an awareness?level program intended to support safe operations, hazard recognition, and regulatory understanding.
