Wildland Fire Mitigation Inspections

Conducted by California Safety Training, these inspections are crucial for assessing and reducing wildfire hazards around structures in high-risk Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones. We ensure compliance with PRC 4291, NFPA 1144, and local fire safety regulations to improve survivability during wildfire events.

📏 Defensible Space Zones 🌲

Note: Sloped properties may require more than 100 feet of defensible space due to increased fire behavior. ⛰️🔥 Our inspections evaluate wildfire risks across three recognized zones:

Zone 0 – Ember-Resistant Zone (0–5 feet from structures)

  • Remove all combustible materials: leaves 🍂, mulch, woodpiles 🪵, furniture 🛋️, etc.
  • Clear roofs 🏠, decks, and gutters of debris.
  • Replace bark mulch with non-combustible materials (gravel, rock).
  • Use ignition-resistant construction materials.

Zone 1 – Immediate Zone (5–30 feet from structures)

  • Trim branches at least 10 feet from roofs and chimneys 🌬️.
  • Maintain spacing between shrubs and trees 🌳.
  • Keep grass mowed to 4 inches or less 🌾.
  • Remove all dead vegetation and leaf litter.

Zone 2 – Extended Zone (30–100 feet, or to property line)

  • Remove dead and dying plants 🥀.
  • Thin trees and brush to reduce fuel load.
  • Eliminate ladder fuels (vegetation that allows fire to climb) 🪜🔥.
  • Maintain horizontal and vertical spacing between trees.

🧐 Inspection Focus Areas 🎯

Structure Hardening

  • Class A roof condition.
  • Vents screened with 1/8” metal mesh.
  • Ember-resistant decks and eaves.
  • Non-combustible fencing near home.

Access and Egress

  • 12’ wide driveways with 15’ vertical clearance.
  • Clearly marked address signs.
  • Adequate turnarounds for fire apparatus.

Utilities & Hazards

  • 10' clearance around propane tanks.
  • Safe storage of flammable liquids.
  • Overhead power line vegetation clearance.

📄 What Property Owners Receive 🎁

  • Customized inspection report with photos.
  • Zone-specific recommendations for vegetation management.
  • Educational resources for long-term wildfire resilience.
  • Follow-up support or re-inspection options.
